Rationale: Breastfeeding has known benefits for both mother and infant. It is increasingly accepted that women with epilepsy (WWE) should be encouraged to breastfeed. The practice of breastfeeding, however, may be challenging for WWE given the prior recommendations not to breastfeed if taking antiepileptic drugs, and the associated interruptions in sleep patterns that may increase risk of seizures in WWE. It is not known if WWE initiate breastfeeding at rates similar to women without epilepsy (WWoE).  Methods: The Maternal Outcomes and Neurodevelopmental Effects of Antiepileptic Drugs (MONEAD) study is a prospective, observational, multi-center investigation of pregnancy outcomes for both the mother and child.
