For many people with epilepsy (PWE), self-care and maintenance of a consistent routine are part of a strategy to help minimize the risk of seizures.
Clinicians can play a critical role in supporting self-management by deepening their understanding of the social determinants of health and referring patients and caregivers to evidence-based programs and resources that build skills for managing daily life with epilepsy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people with epilepsy are “more likely to participate in self-management programs if recommended by their physician.”
