EPILEPSY AND BICYCLE: OBSERVATION IN THE EPILEPSY MONITORING UNIT

Rationale: Recently many patients with epilepsy ride bicycle. But seizures during bicycle make fatal injury. Purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics of epilepsy patients who experience the epileptic seizure during bicycling in epilepsy monitoring unit.(EMU) Methods: : Retrospectively survey the all epileptic seizure videos that were recorded in EMU from January, 2012 to December, 2013 at the Department of Neurology, Epilepsy Center, Samsung Medical Center. Results: Three hundred ninety three epileptic seizure patients underwent the video EEG monitoring for two years. Eleven patients experienced seizure during bicycling in EMU. Six patients were male and eight patients had abnormal brain MRI finding such as hippocampal sclerosis and vascular malformation. The epileptic seizure occurred during bicycling after 5.36day (Mean±SD; 5.36±4.36) in EMU. Conclusions: Our data showed that epileptic seizures occurred during bicycle. We suggested that patients with epilepsy need more safety equipments during bicycle. More studies are needed to know about the safety riding bicycle.
