Rationale:
This study aims to determine the incidence of seizure in neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) who were treated with therapeutic hypothermia. HIE is the most common cause of neonatal seizure accounting for 38% of all neonatal seizures (1).Per Abend et al, 48% of neonates with HIE develop seizure (2). We wanted to review the incidence of seizure in our institute.
Methods:
We used an Epic Slicer dicer tool to determine the number of babies who were admitted to our NICU with HIE from July 2021 to August 2022. There were total of 45 patients admitted, three patients were preterm< 34), and four patients passed away. We did a retrospective chart review of the remaining 38 newborns and evaluated how many patients developed seizures.
