Rationale: The American Epilepsy Society (AES, Sponsoring Organization) collaborated with the American Clinical Neurophysiology Society (ACNS) to create a Match for Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology (CNP) Fellowship - Electroencephalography Track (EEG) programs. This was initiated to standardize the process and timeline for resident applicants in alignment with initiatives from the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) for fellowships across subspecialties.
The Match focused on ACGME-sponsored fellowship programs in adult and pediatric specialties. Each institution may have one or two year tracks in Epilepsy and Clinical Neurophysiology, with multiple algorithms possible across programs. There are also permutations in CNP training with tracks in electroencephalography (EEG), Electromyography (EMG), mixed (EMG/EEG) and Intraoperative Monitoring (IOM). Both AES and ACNS expressed support of a Match which was verified at the 2020 AES and 2021 ACNS meetings. The process was managed by National Resident Matching Program (NRMP)® to implement the Match for applicants.
Methods:
There were 150 programs included in analysis (excluding withdrawn and not participating). Characteristics of matched and unmatched slots, as well as filled and unfilled programs, were compared using the chi-squared or Wilcoxon rank sum tests. Variables compared included slot/program geographic region, division, program specialty, patient age group, and number of positions available at the institution. Two-sided p-values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant.
