Rationale: To compare quality of life (QOL) measurements in age grouped patients following temporal lobectomy versus extra-temporal (frontal and/or parietal) resection for the treatment of medically intractable epilepsy. Methods: A consecutive, retrospective QOL analysis of patients who underwent either temporal or extra-temporal epilepsy surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin from 2002-2005 was conducted. Data was collected via post-operative chart review and patient/family interview. QOL was assessed by mailing validated questionnaires (Quality of Life in Childhood Epilepsy or Quality of Life in Epilepsy for Adolescents) to patients or their caregivers. Patients were divided into cohorts based on type of surgery (temporal versus frontal and/or parietal resection) and age in years (0-13 versus 14-18). Results: Fifty-one children underwent either temporal lobectomy or extra-temporal resection for treatment of medically refractory epilepsy. Please refer to table below. Conclusions: There is no statistically significant difference in QOL scores following either temporal or extra-temporal resection for the treatment of medically refractory epilepsy in age grouped patients.
