Rationale:
Deficits in cognitive domains are well-documented among children with epilepsy (CWE) (Reuner et al., 2016). Studies also report higher prevalence of learning disabilities, including reading disabilities, in CWE (Reilly et al., 2014), but less is known about the mechanisms of these deficits. Reading is comprised of several component skills and comprehension is documented as a particular area of difficulty among CWE (Currie et al., 2018). This study applied theory from learning disabilities literature to evaluate the profile of reading and language-related skills in CWE. We hypothesized CWE would demonstrate weaker language, pre-reading, and reading skills, with particular weaknesses expected for timed tasks, compared to the normative sample.
Methods:
Participants (N=150, 73 males, mean age=10.7 years) from a larger epilepsy database who had completed a reading comprehension measure were included. Children with IQ<
