Rationale: Although EEG is known as non-invasive, continuous electroencephalography monitoring has a significant risk of pressure ulcers caused by electrodes. We investigated the incidence and risk factors of pressure ulcers in continuous electroencephalography monitoring for more than 24 hours.
Methods: All patients who underwent continuous electroencephalography monitoring for more than 24 hours from January 2020 to August 2021 were reviewed based on their medical records. All patients were divided into the presence (lesion positive) and absence (lesion negative) of compression ulcers confirmed by a clinician. Their medical records were reviewed to evaluate the risk factors for pressure ulcers by EEG electrodes.
Results: A total of 794 patients were analyzed in this study. Their mean age was 56.0 ± 21.5, the average duration of the continuous EEG was 46.3 ± 38.4 hours. Pressure ulcers were identified in 35 patients (4.4%). The odds ratio (OR) of developing pressure ulcers was higher if age >56 (OR=6.4), performed in the ICU (OR=5.9), and the patient was comatose (OR=5.2). The recording time also has high OR, 27.6 and 35.5 if 72 and 100 hours, respectively.
Conclusions: This study is the first study of risk factors for pressure ulcers by electrodes in continuous electroencephalography monitoring in South Korea. Our findings suggest that the pressure ulcers caused by electrodes in continuous electroencephalography monitoring can be preventable with due diligence in clinical settings.
