The aim of this study was to compare seizure frequency and antiepileptic drug (AED) treatment with the situation five years earlier in a group of young people with uncomplicated epilepsy., We followed 99 young people with uncomplicated epilepsy from 1999 to 2004.
Data was collected from medical records from swedish hospitals and from self-reported questionnaires. We collected data about medication and seizure frequency., One third of the patients were still using old anti-epileptic drugs (Phenytoin, Karbamazepin or Valproate) compared to 67 % five years earlier.
The number of patients using new antiepileptic drugs or a combination of drugs had increased from 23 to 41 %. Despite of these changes of medication the seizure frequency had not improven significantly. However ,the number of patients not using antiepileptic drugs had increased from 9 to 19 % during these five years. These patients were also seizure free., There have been considerable changes in the use of anti-epileptic drugs during the last few years in this group and that reflects a shift in AED use in Sweden during this period.
In this study we could not demonstrate that these changes of medication have improved the seizure frequency for young people with uncomplicated epilepsy.,
