RATIONALE: Limited data is available on persistence of seizure freedom off antiepielptic drugs after epilepsy surgery.
METHODS: We reviewed seizure outcome in patients who came off antiepileptic drugs after being seizure-free for two years following temporal lobe epilepsy surgery.
RESULTS: Follow-up was available in 45 patients who discontinued their AEDs following epilepsy surgery. 28 (62%) patients successfully discontinued their AEDs with no seizure recurrence. 17 (28%) had seizure recurrence requiring reinstitution of AEDs
CONCLUSIONS: The majority of patients who are seizure-free after temporal lobe epilepsy surgery can successfully discontinue their AEDs
