Rationale: Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS) is the only FDA-approved device to treat patients with refractory epilepsy. The mechanisms behind the therapeutic effect of VNS remain unknown but are thought to involve afferent-mediated modulation to cortical circuits [1]. In this work, we use an optical imaging system to characterize vagus nerve evoked potentials (VEPs) in the cortex in response to typical VNS stimulation paradigms.
Methods: We use a holographic imaging system to optically record cortical tissue displacements associated with neural activity in vivo. This system measures nanometer-level displacements with high spatial (50 µm) and temporal (< 1
