After completing his medical training, Dr. Ajome-Marsan headed the EEG Department at the University of Torino before moving to the Montreal Neurological Institute in 1950 for three years and then to the National Institutes of Health.  At the NIH (1954-1979), Dr. Ajmone-Marsan served as Chief of the Branch of Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology before becoming Chief of the Neuroscience Branch of the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke.  He moved to the University of Miami in 1979 as Chief of Electroencephalography.  He retired in 1997. 

 

Dr. Ajmone-Marsan published approximately 150 papers and book chapters that covered topics such as thalamic anatomy and thalamocortical pathways, the neurophysiological basis of epileptiform discharges, and epilepsy surgery.  In addition to serving as President of the AES, he was President of the American EEG Society, President of the International Federation of Societies for Electroencephalography and Clinical Neurophysiology, and Editor-in-Chiefs of the Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology and the IBRO Symposia Monograph Series.  His honors and awards include the William G. Lennox Award and the Herbert Jasper Award.
