Epilepsy Currents, an open access commentary journal of the American Epilepsy Society (AES), has received a Journal Impact Factor of 9.333, ranking it in the top 2 percent of journals, according to the 2018 bibliometric report from Journal Citation Reports. The journal’s impact factor has steadily increased in the past seven years.

“Epilepsy research is of growing interest and this substantial increase in the journal’s impact factor reflects that our efforts to provide timely information about advances in epilepsy research and clinical practice is increasingly recognized within the professional community,” said Shlomo Shinnar, M.D., Ph.D., president of AES. “This puts Epilepsy Currents in the same ranks as the leading neurology journals and reflects the value it provides.”

Research impact (bibliometrics) is based on an analysis of citations and content. The journal’s impact factor was 5.625 in 2017. The new impact factor of 9.333 is based on 140 citations in 2017 of papers published in 2015 and 2016, according to Journal Citation Reports (Clarivate Analytics, 2018).

“This achievement reflects the hard work of the entire Editorial Board and AES staff,” said Jack Parent, M.D., Epilepsy Currents chief editor. “We look forward to continuing to provide access to cutting-edge science and clinical expertise in the epilepsy field through publication of thoughtful commentaries, reviews, guidelines and position statements.

Unlike most medical society journals, Epilepsy Currents is intended not only for those specializing in the field of epilepsy, but also for generalists with an interest in this common disorder that affects 1 out of 26 people. A cadre of contributing editors with expertise in basic science and patient-focused research author commentaries on breakthroughs, trends, and controversies in epilepsy for each issue.

AES publishes six bimonthly issues of the journal per year. American Epilepsy Society members and subscribers receive the print version. All content is also available at no charge at the journal’s website, epilepsycurrents.org. Articles are indexed in PubMed.
