CHICAGO - David H. Labiner, MD, FAES was presented with the 2021 Distinguished Service
Award during the 2021 Annual Meeting of the American Epilepsy Society (AES).
Dr. Labiner is professor and chair of the Department of Neurology, professor of neurosurgery
at The University of Arizona College of Medicine, and a professor of pharmacy practice and
science at The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy; both colleges are divisions of The
University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson.
He is a former president of the National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC), as well as a
former member of the boards of directors of the Epilepsy Foundation of America, the Epilepsy
Foundation of Arizona, and the AES. He also served on the board of directors of the University
Medical Center (Tucson) and the board of the University of Arizona Health Network.
Dr. Labiner's practice is focused on the care of individuals with epilepsy and seizure disorders.
In addition to authoring or co-authoring over 100 peer-reviewed articles, he has maintained a
research program funded for over 15 years by the CDC. While president of the NAEC, he led
the effort to develop an accreditation system for epilepsy centers in the United States. In his
roles on the aforementioned boards, he has been active in advocacy for a public health effort
to support individuals with epilepsy and their families.
Established in 1993, the AES Distinguished Service award recognizes outstanding service by an
individual in the field of epilepsy, including non-educational and non-scientific, with an
emphasis on exemplary contributions to advancing AES' mission and service to its members.
