ATLANTA—Gregory Kent Bergey, MD, FANA, FAAN, FAAAS, FAES will begin a three-year term as Member-at-Large of the American Epilepsy Society (AES) Nominating Committee at the end of the Society’s 2025 Annual Meeting in Atlanta, GA on December 5-8, 2025.
Dr. Bergey is professor emeritus in the Department of Neurology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine after serving over 25 years as professor and director of the Johns Hopkins Epilepsy Center and previously in a similar role at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. A graduate of Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, he trained in internal medicine at Yale and neurology at Johns Hopkins with postdoctoral training in neurophysiology at the NIH and is boarded in internal medicine, neurology and epilepsy.
At Johns Hopkins he was co-director of the Epilepsy Research Laboratory where their research focused on neuronal modeling, analysis of seizure dynamics and neuromodulation in the treatment of epilepsy. In addition, he was very active clinically and enjoyed the treatment of many patients with epilepsy.
His involvement with AES dates back more than 30 years and includes serving as Scientific Program Chair and as a member of the AES Board of Directors. Throughout his AES committee service, he has been chair of the Investigators Professional Development Committee and past chair of the Technology Committee and chair of the Epileptogenesis Task Force. One of the four founding senior editors of Epilepsy Currents, he has served on the editorial board of Epilepsy Currents including as chief editor. He has been very active in various capacities for AES grant reviews. He currently is one of the AES co-leads for the ongoing revision of the Epilepsy Surgery guidelines. In 2010 he received the American Epilepsy Society Distinguished Service Award.
