Howard P. Goodkin, M.D., Ph.D., has been appointed Treasurer-elect of the American Epilepsy Society (AES), a medical and scientific society with 4,400 members. Dr. Goodkin will serve one year as treasurer-elect and will then begin a three-year term as treasurer.
Dr. Goodkin is the Shure Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at the University of Virginia (UVA). He currently serves as the Chair of the UVA Department of Neurology and as the Director of Pediatric Neurology.
Dr. Goodkin is a clinician investigator with a research focus of elucidating the cellular and molecular mechanisms that contribute to the pathogenesis of status epilepticus. In addition, he was a founding member of the pediatric Status Epilepticus Research Group (pSERG), a multi-center collaboration seeking to improve the care of children with pharmacoresistant status epilepticus.
Dr. Goodkin has a very deep appreciation of the American Epilepsy Society's history and its longstanding vision to improve the lives of people with epilepsy. He believes the AES is a vital component of the epilepsy community and thus has served the AES in many roles. Dr. Goodkin is currently a member of the Society's Board of Directors, the Budget & Audit Committee, and a trustee of Lennox & Lombroso Fund. He has been a member of the Epilepsy Fellowship Program Directors Committee; past Chair of the Education and Professional Development Committee, the CME Review Committee, and the Archives Committee.
In addition to the AES, he is currently an associate editor of Epilepsy Research, a member of the editorial boards of Annals of Neurology and Pediatric Neurology, and a member of many professional organizations aligned with his work and interests: AAN, AAP, ANA, CNS, ILAE, UCNS, PCN.
Dr. Goodkin is a graduate of University of Pennsylvania (B.S.E. and M.S.E. Bioengineering) and obtained his M.D. and Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Washington University, St. Louis. He completed postdoctoral training at St. Louis Children's Hospital (pediatrics) and Boston Children's Hospital (pediatric neurology, clinical neurophysiology/epilepsy).
