CHICAGO – Jorge Gonzalez-Martinez, MD, PhD has been elected to the American Epilepsy Society (AES) board of directors beginning at the conclusion of the Society's annual meeting in Chicago (Dec. 3-7, 2021). A medical and scientific society of more than 4,200 members, the AES is dedicated to advancing research and education for preventing, treating, and curing epilepsy.

Dr. Gonzalez-Martinez is a board-certified neurosurgeon subspecialized in epilepsy and functional neurosurgery. He holds the Jean Talairach endowed chair in Epilepsy Surgery at University of Pittsburgh. He is the director of epilepsy and movement disorders surgery and co-director of the Epilepsy Center at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Gonzalez has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters related to epilepsy surgery and methods of brain mapping for patients with medically intractable epilepsy and movement disorders. He has pioneered novel surgical methods for treating medically refractory seizures such as stereo-electroencephalography, SEEG guided laser ablative procedures, neuromodulatory interventions, and robotic guided surgeries. He has a special interest neuro-electrophysiology, intracranial signal processing, and behavioral neuroscience studies. Dr Gonzalez is the PI of the Cortical System Lab at University of Pittsburgh, studying signal processing from intracranial electrodes and his research has been funded by the NSF and NIH.

Dr. Gonzalez-Martinez has served AES on the Translational Research Committee (2017-2019), Scientific Program Committee (2019-2021 and 2013-2014), and Surgery Workgroup (2014-2016). He is currently a Co-Chair of the AES/AAN/CNS Surgery Guideline Workgroup. He has been serving the American Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery in the capacity of member of the executive committee for the last 6 years.
