ATLANTA―Sucheta Joshi, MD, MS, FCNS, FAES, will be presented the J. Kiffin Penry Award for Excellence in Epilepsy Care during the 2025 Annual Meeting of the American Epilepsy Society (AES). The J. Kiffin Penry Award for Excellence in Epilepsy Care honors Dr. Penry’s lifelong focus on and genuine concern for people with epilepsy. It recognizes individuals whose work has had a major impact on patient care and has improved the quality of life for persons with epilepsy. The award is funded through the AES J. Kiffin Penry Fund.
Dr. Joshi is a pediatric neurologist and epileptologist. She is a professor in pediatric neurology, at USC Keck School of Medicine, and the medical director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Her clinical and scholarly interests include improving access to epilepsy care for children in medically underserved areas using innovative methods for epilepsy care such as telemedicine and telementoring, and the transition of adolescents with epilepsy to adult care.
She has been key faculty for the development of several Pediatric Epilepsy ECHO projects since 2013, to improve the engagement of primary care providers in epilepsy care. Prior to the pandemic, Dr. Joshi led a HRSA sponsored multi-state Pediatric Epilepsy Telemedicine program that included diverse underserved patient populations. More recently Dr. Joshi served on the AES/ILAE-NA Disparities taskforce to create recommendations on the current state of disparities in epilepsy care in the United States.
Her work in the transition of care for adolescents with epilepsy resulted in development of a transition assessment tool for epilepsy and a regional, multisite transition registry to better recognize the gaps and needs for these patients. She has served on several AES and CNS committees, as the medical director for the American Academy of Pediatrics National Coordinating Center for Epilepsy, on the executive board of the Child Neurology Society and as secretary of the board of the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Consortium.
