ORLANDO, Fla. ― Karen L. Secore, MS, APRN, CNRN, presented the Rebecca Goldberg Kaufman AES Clinical Lecture in Ethical Neuropsychiatry during the Best Practices in Clinical Epilepsy Symposium at the 2023 Annual Meeting of the American Epilepsy Society (AES). Dr. Secore spoke on “Providing Comprehensive and Inclusive Epilepsy Care at a Community-based Hospital.”

Dr. Secore has worked in the field of epilepsy for over 30 years. She began as clinical coordinator at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH, and assisted with developing its epilepsy program in 1991. She became a nurse practitioner for the program in 1999 and continued to coordinate the inpatient program and work as a clinician in the outpatient clinic.

Over the years, she has been committed to education and advocacy for patients and families, being actively involved with her support group and the Epilepsy Foundation of America. She also was involved in many research projects, educational offerings and served on various committees in AES and American Association of Neuroscience Nurses.

After 30 years of service, she retired, yet continued making contributions to the field working on the development of the Cottage Epilepsy Center in Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Calif. The Cottage Epilepsy Center officially opened in October 2020 and, despite the pandemic, has become a level 3 epilepsy center in a short time.

Dr. Secore’s work in patient advocacy and education has not waivered and she continues to offer support for the complex needs of her patients in their diagnosis and treatment.
