An Important Message From AES

Wednesday, March 9, 2022 | As medical and scientific professionals, members of the American Epilepsy Society are deeply concerned about the human cost of the unfortunate events in Ukraine—particularly for the region’s most vulnerable.

For people with epilepsy and seizure disorders, disruptions in access to treatment and medications are further compounded by the physical and psychological stresses of this frightening situation. For our epilepsy colleagues who continue to provide care under the most trying circumstances, we honor your hard work and commitment. Please know that our thoughts are with you and the people you treat.

AES leaders are in communication with leaders of the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE), which is monitoring the situation closely. ILAE has identified several priorities for action and is working with dispatch to implement them.

The AES Board of Directors, on behalf of our membership, underscores ILAE’s concern about troubling inequities in access to healthcare wherever in the world these gaps occur. We send our concern and support to those here in the United States who have family, friends, and colleagues in Ukraine and the surrounding region. AES leadership will continue to stay in touch with our colleagues at ILAE, and will share information and opportunities for action.

Should you have an interest in participating in ILAE's efforts, please contact them directly at info@ilae.org or info@ibe-epilepsy.org.
