LOS ANGELES ― David Labiner, MD, FRSM, FANA, FAES, was elected second vice president of the American Epilepsy Society (AES), at the conclusion of the Society’s 2024 Annual Meeting in Los Angeles. He will begin his term as president in 2027. A medical and scientific society of more than 5,200 members, AES is dedicated to advancing research and education for preventing, treating and curing epilepsy.

Dr. Labiner is a professor and chairman of neurology and a professor of neurosurgery at The University of Arizona College of Medicine and a professor of pharmacy practice and science at The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy, both divisions of The University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, Tucson. He received his medical degree from and completed his internship at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta. He completed a residency with the Department of Neurology at Columbia University in New York and a fellowship at Duke University, Durham, N.C.  

He is the past president of the National Association of Epilepsy Centers, as well as a former member of the boards of directors of the Epilepsy Foundation of America, the Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona and the American Epilepsy Society. He also served on the board of directors of the University Medical Center, Tucson, and the board of the University of Arizona Health Network.  

His practice has been focused on the care of individuals with epilepsy and seizure disorders. In addition to authoring or co-authoring more than 150 peer-reviewed articles, he led the effort to develop an accreditation system for epilepsy centers in the United States. In his roles on multiple boards, he has been active in advocacy for a public health effort to support individuals with epilepsy and their families.
