BALTIMORE – Kevin Chapman, M.D., FAES, has been elected to the American Epilepsy Society
(AES) board of directors beginning at the conclusion of the Society's annual meeting in
Baltimore (Dec. 6-10, 2019). A medical and scientific society of more than 4,200 members,
the AES is dedicated to advancing research and education for preventing, treating and curing
epilepsy.
A pediatric epileptologist and clinical researcher, Dr. Chapman is an associate professor in the
Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Neurology at the Children’s Hospital
Colorado, University of Colorado Denver, where he is also the medical director of Inpatient
Neurology Services. His clinical practice centers on the care of pediatric patients with drugresistant epilepsy with a focus on evaluation for epilepsy surgery. He has an interest in
intracranial monitoring and advanced EEG and neuroimaging post-processing techniques. His
primary focus of research is on status epilepticus and electrical status epilepticus during sleep
(ESES).
Widely published and a sought-after speaker and lecturer, Dr. Chapman represented AES as
the selected speaker for oral comments for the FDA’s Scientific Data and Information about
Products Containing Cannabis or Cannabis-Derived Compounds Public Hearing (2019). A
member of AES since 2001, Dr. Chapman has served on numerous committees including as
chair of the Membership Committee (2016-2018), Council on Communication (2016-2018),
chair of the Scientific Program Committee (2018), and as a member of the Annual Meeting
Committee (2018), the Finance Committee (2016-2018) and the CME Review Committee
(2013-2015).
In 2016 – along with Dr. Joseph Drazkowski – Dr. Chapman proposed and implemented the
Fellow of the American Epilepsy Society (FAES) to provide recognition and appreciation for
contributions made by members in advancing clinical epilepsy care. Dr. Chapman has also
been recognized for outstanding contributions as an educator and mentor.
Dr. Chapman is a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin. He did his postdoctoral
training at Baylor College of Medicine in Waco, Texas and completed a fellowship in clinical
neurophysiology-epilepsy/EEG at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.
