Samuel Wiebe, MSc, MD, FRCPC, FCAHS, Receives the American Epilepsy Society's 2022 Distinguished Service Award

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Samuel Wiebe, M.Sc., M.D., F.R.C.P.C., F.C.A.H.S., was presented with the 2022 Distinguished Service Award during the 2022 Annual Meeting of the American Epilepsy Society (AES).

Dr. Wiebe obtained his M.D. degree at the University of Guadalajara, Mexico, and specialized in Internal Medicine at the National University of Mexico. He trained in Neurology, Epilepsy and Electrophysiology at the University of Western Ontario, Canada, followed by a Master's degree in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster University, Canada. He served as Director of the Epilepsy Programme at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada, where he founded the Evidence-Based Neurology Training Programme. He became Head of Neurology and Associate Dean of Clinical Research at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary. He is currently Director of the Calgary Comprehensive Epilepsy Programme, Professor of Clinical Neurosciences, and Chair of the Clinical Research Unit at the University of Calgary.

He is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. In the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) he has served as President of the Canadian League Against Epilepsy, Chair of ILAE-North America, and consecutively as Secretary General, Treasurer and President of ILAE. His academic interests include epilepsy surgery, health services and outcomes, and evidence-based medicine. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and given over 350 international lectures. Dr Wiebe has mentored numerous national and international clinicians and researchers.
Established in 1993, the AES Distinguished Service award recognizes outstanding service by an individual in the field of epilepsy, including non-educational and non-scientific, with an emphasis on exemplary contributions to advancing AES' mission and service to its members.
